The Anatomy of a Typical Pinoy Teleserye ♥

*disclaimer: the original title of this post is "A Typical Pinoy Teleserye," and this entry is actually based on my personal observation and opinion. Lalalala~

The “Nawalay na Anak sa Magulang” (NAM) Concept

Whenever there is a new teleserye that’s going to air on primetime TV, there is one thing that I’m looking forward to: kung sino na naman kayang mag-ina/kapatid ang nagkahiwalay?

Seriously, why is it that every story revolves around the endless search of a mother (or father, or brother, or sister, o kung sino mang kapamilya) to her child (or brother, or sister, whatsoever)? What’s with this concept ba that makes Filipinos hooked with this type of story? Is it because of the famous “close family-ties” trait of the Filipinos that influenced this concept? If I’m not mistaken, teleseryes reflect reality. But hello? Are Filipino parents that careless to lose his/her child? Hahaha

Let’s do a roll call for the teleseryes airing today: let’s begin with ABS-CBN Primetime. Aryana. Aryana (Ella Cruz) was separated from her father Victor (Tonton Gutierrez). Princess and I. Princess Areeyah a.k.a. “Mikay” (Kathryn Bernardo) was separated from her father King Anand (Albert Martinez). The recently ended Walang Hanggan. Daniel (played by the super hunky pogilicious papa Coco Martin) was separated from his parents Emily (Dawn Zulueta) and Marco (Richard Gomez). Of course, his leading lady should not miss the trend. Turns out, Katerina (Julia Montes) was abandoned by her mother when she was young. Ina, Kapatid, Anak. O diba title pa lang obvious na may nagkahiwalay na naman. If I’m not mistaken, Celine was taken by her surrogate mother away from her biological parents. As for Kahit Puso’y Masugatan, Andrea (Iza Calzado) and Veronica (Andi Eigenmann) were not really blood-related but they treated each others as sisters, and then they got separated.

GMA: Aso ni San Roque. Of course the young and adorable Fatima (played by Mona Louise Rey) was separated from her biological parents played by LJ Reyes and TJ Trinidad. Luna Blanca. Although they found each other immediately, they were still separated. Luis was separated from his family. Then Luna was separated from her mother and her twin Blanca. Then after the long search and a little while of finally being together, Luna and Rowena were separated (na naman, nak ng pating naman) from Blanca and Luis. O diba? Hide and seek lang ang peg. One True Love. Tisoy (Alden Richards) was separated from his biological parents.

Here are some of the famous teleseryes with this concept: Amaya (2011-2012, GMA); Angelito: Batang Ama (2011-2012, ABS-CBN); Biritera (2012, GMA); Bituin (2002-2003, ABS-CBN); Budoy (2011-2012, ABS-CBN); Dahil May Isang Ikaw (2009-2010, ABS-CBN); Dahil Sa Pag-ibig (2012, ABS-CBN); Encantadia (2005, GMA); Esperanza (1997-1999, ABS-CBN); Grazilda (2010-2011, GMA); Hiram (2004, ABS-CBN); Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin (2011, GMA); Kambal Sa Uma (2009, ABS-CBN); Mara Clara (1992-1997, 2010-2011, ABS-CBN); Lorenzo’s Time (2012, ABS-CBN); Magkaribal (2010, ABS-CBN); May Bukas Pa (2009-2010, ABS-CBN); Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin (ABS-SBN); Mula Sa Puso (1997-1999, 2011, ABS-CBN); Munting Heredera (2011-2012, GMA); Mutya (2011, ABS-CBN); My Binondo Girl (2011-2012, ABS-CBN); Pangako Sa’yo (2000-2002, ABS-CBN); Sana Maulit Muli (2007, ABS-CBN); Tayong Dalawa (ABS-CBN); Twin Hearts (GMA); and many many more.(ia-update ko pa to, wait lang. hahaha)

The Prince Charming

Coco Martin as Daniel
The prince charming of Pinoy teleseryes should be… ehem… rich? Hahahah kaya nga prince eh. Even though there’s this “mayaman-mahirap love story,” it always turns out that the poor boy is actually the long-lost/runaway heir of a wealthy family. Or let’s just say he succeeded in life so he became wealthy. Basta hindi dapat manatiling mahirap ang mga bidang lalaki. Maybe it has something to do with men’s ego, as well as the idea of “fairytales.” The story should always be a happy ending, and maybe that includes a good social status. Nakapanood ka na ba ng teleserye na happy ending, magkakasama silang buong pamilya pero mahirap? Hmmm.

Famous examples. Tisoy (One True Love) is actually from a well-off family. Daniel (Walang Hanggan) is the deprived son from the Montenegros. Eli (Maging Sino Ka Man). Budoy (Budoy, although he didn’t end up with Jackie). Erik (Grazilda). Gabriel (Mula Sa Puso). In the 2011 adaptation, Gabriel found his wealthy biological father in the character portrayed by Chris Villanueva.

Antagonists 1: The Third Party

The antagonists (kontrabidas), or sometimes the character involved in the love triangle, are usually played by the protagonist’s brother/ sister/ or minsan tatay o nanay pa nung bida. In most cases, as in most, since the protagonist was separated from his/her parents, there will always be the “ampon” to replace the protagonist’s role in the family. This “ampon” will most of the time turn out to be the antagonist or yung makikiagaw pa dun sa love interest nung bida. Or kung hindi man ampon, blood-related sila talaga pero hindi nila alam.

Famous examples: Nathan (Walang Hanggan). Clara (Mara Clara). Capt. Ramon Pelaez (Zorro). TJ Trinidad’s character here was the real biological son of Antonio’s “mom”). Alondra (Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin). Angelica (Marimar). Surprised? In the Pinoy adaptation, Angelica (played by Katrina Halili) turns out to be Marimar’s sister. I just can’t remember it clearly if it was true or if she altered the DNA results. Haha. Basta may ganong concept padin. Marikit (Amaya). BJ (Budoy). Mira (Encantadia). Cindy (Grazilda). Dave (Tayong Dalawa).

Or kung minsan (sige na nga , minsan), kung close si kapatid na nakikidawdaw sa love triangle,  si kapatid na protagonist ay magpaparaya.

Famous examples: Romana (Ilumina). Blanca (Luna Blanca). Amihan (Encantadia). Fina (Dwarfina). Victoria (Magkaribal).

Antagonists 2: The Extreme Villains

The most common factor that drives the antagonists is love. Like I mentioned earlier, the antagonists are sometimes the characters involved in a love triangle. It can be the envious psycho-ex or the psycho-stalker or psycho-admirer of the hero/ine.

If you’re already existing when Pangako Sa’yo was aired, can you forget the famous “World War” between Madame Claudia and Amor Powers? The famous femme fatale in the story is Madame Claudia (played by Jean Garcia). Of course, she too, is involved in a love triangle between Amor Powers (Eula Valdez) and Eduardo (Tonton Gutierrez).

The same goes with these other famous examples: Miguel (Walang Hanggan). Gary (Mara Clara). Alondra (Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin). Roberto (Broken Vow).

Endings

Kidnapping. The climax (normally, the kidnapping thinggy always happen near the end of the series) of a typical Pinoy teleserye would always include "kidnapping". Thanks Yuki Auxtero for reminding me about the teleserye endings. Haha. Maybe I don't need to cite examples for this since 99% of teleseryes includes "kidnapping" on their storylines.

Oh well. All I can say is, there are a lot of stories, concepts, ideas in this world waiting to be told. Aminin mo, napapangiti ka dahil totoo diba? Hahahaha~
